Ali Clarke: Couples Therapy from a psychodynamic, psychosexual perspective
Friends Meeting House St Giles, OxfordI will be discussing how couples therapy is different from individual therapy and some some of the common presentations. I will offer a number of models and tools I use with couples and two or three case studies to illustrate examples of successes and challenges (and how success might be defined in couple work). The case study material will not be recorded and will be an opportunity to share and learn with others in the room.
Matthew Chuard: Where does it all come from? A consideration of the role of unconscious phantasy in everyday life and the consulting room: From infancy throughout the life-span.
Friends Meeting House St Giles, OxfordThe role of unconscious phantasy in everyday life and its origins
Drawing upon the work of Melanie Klein, research from infant observation and the neuroscience literature on early child development, this presentation will examine the role that unconscious phantasy plays in shaping our everyday lives and interactions. Drawing upon clinical material and works of art from the consulting room and beyond, the origins of unconscious phantasy will be examined, considering both the individual and wider social structures that shape the development of our personal subjectivities and identities. Through this consideration of the development of unconscious phantasy, the implications for contemporary clinical practice will also be examined.

How can we explain this, and what can we learn from those practitioners and researchers who adopt a more direct approach towards sexuality? Can what we learn from […]
Mark Brayne: Attachment-Informed EMDR – a paradigm shift for psychotherapy
Friends Meeting House St Giles, OxfordYou've probably heard of EMDR - that weird finger-wagging, eye movement-following therapy that's getting quite a bit of press these days. Prince Harry has famously had it, and so have quite a few prominent folk ready to talk publicly about their experience of EMDR clearing their PTSD. If you'd like to know more, or indeed if […]
Revd Canon Dr Joanna Collicutt: ‘Head and heart knowledge in psychological therapy: some insights from the science of memory.’
Friends Meeting House St Giles, OxfordPsychological therapists have always been aware of the distinction between the client's theoretical understanding of issues and affect-laden insight. (A similar distinction is drawn in spiritual traditions between theological belief and personal faith.) Cognitive science has been able to give some precision to this distinction with important applications in the treatment of both anxiety and […]
