Matthew Chuard: Where does it all come from? A consideration of the role of unconscious phantasy in everyday life and the consulting room: From infancy throughout the life-span.

Dr Matthew Chuard is currently the Course Lead for the MA Working with children, young
people & families: a psychoanalytic observational approach: the pre-clinical training in child
and adolescent psychotherapy at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust. He
teaches psychoanalytic theory and offers clinical supervision on the Tavistock doctoral
training in child psychotherapy. He has recently published a paper in the Journal of Child
Psychotherapy: ‘Primitive anxieties and the small group: multi-agency working and the risk of
collaboration’. He originally worked as a secondary school teacher and then trained as an
Educational and Child Psychologist before going on to qualify as a Child and Adolescent
Psychotherapist. As a Child Psychotherapist he has worked in a number of NHS and
educational settings with children, young people and their families and also works in private
practice. He is currently a senior Child Psychotherapist in the Autism and Learning
Disabilities team at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust. His current research
interests are the work of Melanie Klein, the use and function of drawings in child
psychotherapy and unconscious processes in groups and institutions.
