Dance Movement Psychotherapy (DMP) – Elisabeth (Lizzy) Spight MA RDMP

Tuesday November 17 @ 7:45 pm - 9:15 pm

Dance portrait Lizzy 2026In this presentation I would like to give a short insight into the beginnings of dance therapy and how the unique history and development of this therapy form has shaped its identity. It will explain the attachment to various psychological schools, portray important pioneers and in particular highlight the importance of Rudolf Laban as a person and theoretician of modern dance, movement analysis and its impact on dance therapy as we know it today. It will also make clear why dance therapy, although deeply rooted, is consistently embracing new research in all areas of psychology and neuroscience.

Then I will briefly talk about the structure of sessions and my dance therapy work in various age groups, and mainly focus more in depth on two adult case studies and their short term therapy processes in one to one work with me. These include the clients’ drawings of their own dance therapy process.

As this is a presentation of a movement based therapy form I will also invite you to a short guided experiential, to be able to experience your own sensory awareness and movement, individually and as a group. It will be completely voluntary of course. If you prefer to stay seated that is fine.

Elisabeth is a registered Dance Movement Psychotherapist MA, practicing in Oxford, UK, for over 10 years; she works with a wide age range, offers one to one therapy and group therapy. Since 2023 she has been awarded a position of ‘artist in residence’ for the NHS/Oxfordhealth, mental health departments.

She has over 30 years of experience as a performer, choreographer and dance teacher, after completing her dance education in Hamburg, Germany, at an internationally renowned dance college; and also holds a degree in special education, from Hamburg University.

She is deeply rooted in the creative arts (dance and music) as well as in the therapy work. www.oxfordshiredancetherapy.com
