“Cultural exchange in the therapy room” – a closed group discussion facilitated by Yioulia Karagkouni, Psychodrama and Group Psychotherapist (OPS Co-chair, Programme sub-committee)
Friday 18th October 2024 @ 7:45 pm - 9:15 pm
It will be the beginning of the Autumn season, a lovely opportunity for us to come together as a group and try to open this huge subject named ‘’Cultural Exchange’’, where we can share our thoughts, experiences, learn from each other and expand our boundaries.
If, for example, we focus on what might emerge in a process with a client, or in a group, or in a conversation with a colleague, even though the scope is huge, we may consider such issues as:
Experience of town or city versus country
Differences and similarities of language, music, art (what translates between cultures and what does not ; this applies to several other categories also)
Differences and similarities in customs and ways of life, attitude to money and gifts
Differences and similarities in architectural design
Planning, infrastructures, pace of life, personal space in different cultures
Differences and similarities in terms of historical values and memories and traumata including deep ethnic differences and conflicts
Differences and similarities in food and etiquette and cultural manners
Differences and similarities in political organisation, constitutions, and bureaucracies
Differences and similarities in location and the spirit of place, and flora and fauna
These are just a few of the types of possible realms which may lead both to mutual insights and to sometimes deep misunderstandings in this somewhat underrated theme.
The discussion will not be recorded
