Zoom Discussion of a talk from the OPS archive
ZoomThis is the second of our Zoom discussions exploring the rich talk heritage of the OPS stored in our archives. A workshop on: working with the erotic and sexual attraction in therapy‚ issues and professional considerations with Dr Maria Luca
In this workshop, recorded on Oct 15th 2016, Dr. Luca encouraged the participants to abandon the traditional analytic view of the erotic transference as only being located in the client for defensive purposes, and explored the idea of the erotic as providing the capacity to heal. Despite the boundaries about entering a sexual relationship with a client being quite clear, it was important to reflect on the therapist’s own feelings about a client, and whether (s)he might unconsciously be eliciting sexual attraction. Reflecting on her own experience and on a wealth of research, Dr Luca shared a ‘recipe’ she has developed for working with erotic and sexual attraction.

Peer Support group
ZoomDuring this continued chaotic and dislocating time, we as therapists are tending to our clients’ needs, while (again) changing the way we work, how we are living and, at the same time, grappling with how it all feels and what it means. While we are good at noticing and caring for those around us, we are more likely to put our needs in the background; yet, it is essential we look after ourselves and support each other.
The peer support groups are facilitated by two committee members but are designed for all group members to share equally. It is a place to think through how the changes in the world and our practices are impacting us, how we feel - physically and emotionally – and to share stories and ideas for coping with the changes we are experiencing.
Where: Zoom – we will set up a zoom online group – you will need a computer or tablet with a microphone and video
The peer support group will meet at the same time for five consecutive weeks.

This year marks the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri. In The Divine Comedy, he unlocked the collective Unconscious to reveal chaos, guilt, recrimination and occasional glimpses of grace. As a celebration of his enduring influence I have chosen the opening lines of L'Inferno and four contemporary poems that explore our reactions to suffering, loss and judgment.
Edward Lucie Smith's The Lesson considers a first response to death, which may not be what you were expecting.
Charles Causley's rumbustious Death of a Poet is about the funeral of Louis MacNeice, who was working on L'Inferno at the time of his demise.
WH Auden's Musee des Beaux Arts is about attention. It is accompanied by Brueghel's painting The Fall of Icarus which you can find here.
