SUMMARY:Denise Cullington - Ten Things I Love About Psychoanalysis
DESCRIPTION:Writing my book\, The Rough Beast: Psychoanalysis in Everyday Life\, was like a profound meditation on my craft. What did I have to say to an everyday\, curious\, suspicious reader about psychoanalysis? What were the most important things to describe – away from the jargon and over-intellectualising we can sometimes do? What is psychoanalysis (or less intensive analytically-based psychotherapy)? How does it work? Is there anything in it to offer other professionals\, too?  So\, this talk. \nDenise Cullington was lucky enough to train at the Tavistock Clinic and the Institute of Psychoanalysis\, London. Her core profession was Clinical Psychology. Prior to that she lived and painted in the US and Puerto Rico. Her first book\, Breaking Up Blues (Routledge\, 2008) was described as ‘ by far and away the very best I have ever read on the emotional and psychological cost of divorce. It …has the uncanny ability to cut right through to the heart of the issues.’ (Heiss\, Amazon). Patrick Casement described The Rough Beast (Routledge\, 2018) …’as so beautifully written some readers may find this book almost impossible to put down… this remarkable book calls out to be read and re-read. There will be more to find and to enjoy with each reading. It is so readily accessible\, and yet much of it so profound.

SUMMARY:Dr. Joanne Stubley - Working with Complex Trauma
DESCRIPTION:Please note that the talks in 2020 will be moving to the Clerici Building Room CLC 1.02 . This is reached via the Gypsy Lane entrance to Oxford Brookes University. There is a small parking area in front of this Building \nComplex trauma involves chronic\, repeated or sustained trauma often accompanied by captivity. Initially this was the description given by Judith Herman in relation to Vietnam Veterans\, survivors of domestic violence and adult survivors of child sexual abuse. Her descriptions now form the basis of the new psychiatric diagnosis of Complex Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. The evidence suggests that this would also apply to other forms of developmental trauma and severe adult trauma such as torture and imprisonment and many refugee experiences. \nIn psychotherapeutic practice\, we would recognise many of these complex trauma patients as those individuals who may be difficult to engage\, high risk and evoking powerful countertransference experiences and inevitable enactments. Working with this group stretches our psychodynamic frame and may require a more flexible\, adaptive and at times innovative way of making authentic therapeutic contact. \nIn this talk\, I will outline why this may be the case by using psychoanalytic\, neurobiological and attachment theories and suggest ways in which to understand and work with clinical features such as hyperarousal\, dissociation\, somatization and failures of symbolization. \nDr Joanne Stubley is a Medical Psychotherapist at the Tavistock Clinic. She leads the Tavistock Trauma Service and is a member of the British Psychoanalytic Society. She is also trained in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (tf-CBT)\, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) and MDMA – assisted psychotherapy for PTSD. Dr Stubley is Co-Chair of the Royal College of Psychiatrists Psychotherapy Faculty Task group on historical child sexual abuse and is a Clinical Trustee at the charity Freedom from Torture.

SUMMARY:Didier Fellot - Psychodynamic issues confronting counsellors in large organisations. My experiences of working with Thames Valley Police.
DESCRIPTION:Our Colleague and long time member of the OPS Committee will be speaking to us about the clinical work he did with members of the Thames Valley Police. \nDidier completed a Doctor in Medical Biology in his native France. After a long while living in Oxfordshire\, Didier qualified as a  Therapist earning a  Masters Degree in Psychodynamic Practice from Oxford University. As well as working for Thames Valley Police\, Didier worked for the Isis Centre\, The University Counselling Service and in Primary Care. Didier returned to Oxford as a Tutor on  the Psychodynamic Counselling Course in Rewley House. He recently retired from Private Practice and Supervision.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED Leezah Hertzmann and Juliet Newbigin  - Psychotherapy: Looking Beyond Heteronormativity
DESCRIPTION:We (Leezah Hertzmann and Juliet Newbigin) have just edited a collection of papers\, with the title “Sexuality and Gender Now: Looking Beyond Heteronormativity”. Our aim\, in putting this book together\, was to assemble authors whose approach confronts the unremarked heteronormative bias that has dominated psychoanalytic thinking and practice until recently. In our talk we will try to explain the shift that we believe clinicians must make to support in a non-prejudicial way\, their patients whose sexuality and/or gender may not align with the heterosexual “norm”. We will also explain briefly how this book emerged from the work of the Advisory Group that the BPC initiated to support thinking about sexual and gender diversity. \nLeezah Hertzmann is a highly experienced individual and couple psychoanalytic psychotherapist practicing for over twenty years. She is registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council and the UK Council for Psychotherapy and also an accredited practitioner of Mentalization Based Treatment (MBT) registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC MBT Accredited Practitioners). \nJuliet Newbigin is a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy member of the BPF and FPC. She works in private practice and teaches seminars on the impact of significant differences – those of gender\, sexual orientation and ethnicity\, for example – on the clinical relationship. Juliet’s interest in the subject of gender and sexuality goes back to her work as a trainer in self-development with young people and adults in the 1970’s when the impact of discrimination on individual identity was a hot topic.\nShe was involved in the working party that wrote the BPC’s Position Statement on Homosexuality and is currently chair of their Advisory Group on Sexual and Gender Diversity

Sushila is well placed to talk to us about the way she sees the current political mood impacting on the general good will and caring nature of the general public.  Has thinking about supporting those who are most vulnerable in Society changed during the 15 years she has been involved with Refugee Resource? \nSushila has is educated to MSt (Oxford) level in Psychodynamic Practice\, which is UKCP level\, and has been practicing as a psychotherapist for 20 years. She has worked for the NHS\, has a small private practice in central Oxford\, and has worked for Refugee Resource for 15 years. Sushila has spoken to OPS about her work and many members have asked for her to return and speak to us again.  \n​
