DESCRIPTION:EMBODIED RELATING: THE GROUND OF PSYCHOTHERAPY \nNick Totton \nTruly integrating body psychotherapy with verbal work means recognising that our embodied perception is fundamental to all psychotherapy practice. Embodied relating is not an obscure psychotherapeutic theory\, but something embedded in our everyday life: we can all ‘do’ embodied relating\, though some do it better than others. Like many other important aspects of life\, it generally happens of its own accord\, but sometimes benefits from close examination.  \nI believe that all relationship is initially between bodies; this is the concrete experience from which we derive abstractions like ‘transference’\, ‘countertransference’ and ‘projection’. If we explore embodiment\, we encounter relationship; if we explore relationship\, we encounter embodiment. Therapy is more powerful when the practitioner is able to recognise the constant interplay between these two aspects of being human\, and to follow and support the shifts of charge from one to the other. This lets us identify and process the many situations in which relational problems between therapist and client are best understood as issues of embodiment. \nI will be arguing for a shift in psychotherapy from the visual to the visceral. By the visual I mean the observer stance which focuses across space on what we perceive to be happening in the client; shifting towards the visceral means focusing on what is happening in our own bodies as we are directly affected by the client’s presence. This supports us in dropping our detachment and committing to the here-and-now embodied relationship. \nI will start with a fairly brief presentation of these ideas\, and hope to move quite soon towards a discussion.

SUMMARY:Caroline Hickman: Existential grief\, hope and despair in the Anthropocene
DESCRIPTION:Caroline is a lecturer in social work and climate psychology at the University of Bath\, and a practicing psychotherapist and board member of the Climate Psychology Alliance (CPA). Currently for CPA she is supporting the development of a range of therapeutic outreach projects\, working with teachers and in outdoor eco-education projects\, offering workshops in schools (primary and secondary) and universities\, and supporting the development of a service providing climate crisis aware psychotherapy. With CPA she is also creating a series of podcasts on Climate Psychology and Eco-Anxiety – ‘Climate Crisis Conversations – Catastrophe or Transformation.’ \nCaroline works with schools\, parent groups\, youth activist groups and as a psychotherapist with children\, young people and adults dealing with eco anxiety and distress about the climate and biodiversity crisis. \nThrough the University she has been researching for five years children and young people’s feelings\, including eco-anxiety about the climate and biodiversity crisis\, to uncover and explore different stories\, narratives and images around our defences against the ‘difficult truth’ we are facing. Her climate change research is with children and young people in the UK\, Brazil\, the USA\, the Maldives\, Nigeria and Bangladesh. \n

DESCRIPTION:Sushila writes: I have been a psychotherapist working with the public and charitable sectors for 25 years. For the past 16 of those I have worked for Refugee Resource with refugees\, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants. On behalf of Refugee Resource I also offer tailored talks\, workshops and trainings\, and support and supervision to partner and external bodies\, including academic institutions and local authorities. In the past I have worked with people who are homeless and people suffering long-term depressive disorders and personality disorders. I have a small private practice in Oxford city centre\, and spend a lot of free time as an activist working on human rights and greening transport issue.

DESCRIPTION:Starting February 2021 – a new OPS Peer Support Group \nDuring this continued chaotic and dislocating time\, we as therapists are tending to our clients’ needs\, while (again) changing the way we work\, how we are living and\, at the same time\, grappling with how it all feels and what it means. While we are good at noticing and caring for those around us\, we are more likely to put our needs in the background; yet\, it is essential we look after ourselves and support each other. \nThe peer support groups are facilitated by two committee members but are designed for all group members to share equally. DESCRIPTION:Gerry Byrne is consultant nurse and child psychotherapist (Tavistock) and Head of Attachment and Perinatal Services\, Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust (including Family Assessment & Safeguarding Services (FASS)\, Infant Parent Perinatal Service (IPPS) and ReConnect). He is Clinical Lead for Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy for the Trust (Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire) and the originator of the Lighthouse Mentalization-Based Treatment Parenting Programme (LPP). He is an MBT tutor/supervisor (Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families)\, and a D. Phil student in the Department of Social Policy & Intervention\, University of Oxford. He has authored a children’s picture book\, All at Sea\, (2018)\, Walker Books. \nGerry Byrne writes – I work as Head of Attachment and Perinatal Services and Clinical Lead for Child Psychotherapy at Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust. This includes the Family Assessment & Safeguarding Service\, which offers multidisciplinary expert witness assessments and NHS treatments for severe parenting problems\, including child abuse and neglect. \nThe title of this talk is a fusing together of quotes by two poets\, Seamus Heaney and W. H. Auden. I intend it to be read in two ways. Bearing in mind Bion’s observation that “in every consulting room there ought to be two rather frightened people”\, I will explore how the coercion of parents into engaging with our services by the Courts or Social Care presents first a serious challenge\, and second a unique opportunity for the establishment of a collaborative therapeutic relationship. It’s challenging because parents arrive with deep epistemic mistrust of our services. This can be at best anxiety-provoking for us as clinicians\, because we fear for their children’s safety. But it is also a unique opportunity. If epistemic trust can be established\, it will transform the parent’s view\, not only of the child\, but also of therapies on offer and of the potential of help elsewhere in the community. \nI will define epistemic trust and its role in child development and the transmission of culture; and I will outline some hypotheses about its role in therapy. I will then illustrate with clinical examples the achievement of epistemic trust within parents with borderline personality disorder and histories of developmental (and additional) traumas\, showing how it enables them to acknowledge their dangerousness to their children. In thinking about process I will argue that the patient can be viewed as leaving with a crippled trust in the crooked heart of the therapist. DESCRIPTION:The talk will cover the main thesis of The Master and his Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World\, which explains the phenomenological significance of brain lateralisation\, each hemisphere giving rise to an experiential world with differing qualities.  It will also touch on the light this casts on certain aspects of mental illness\, and its implications for psychotherapy. \n(Follow-up discussion for attendees:  Wednesday December 16th 19.30 – 20.30) \nDr Iain McGilchrist is a Quondam Fellow of All Souls College\, Oxford\, an Associate  Fellow of Green Templeton College\, Oxford\, a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists\, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts\, and former Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical Director at the Bethlem Royal & Maudsley Hospital\, London.  He has been a Research Fellow in neuroimaging at Johns Hopkins Hospital\, Baltimore and a Fellow of the Institute of Advanced Studies in Stellenbosch.  He has published original articles and research papers in a wide range of publications on topics in literature\, philosophy\, medicine and psychiatry.  He is the author of a number of books\, but is best-known for The Master and his Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World (Yale 2009)\, and is currently working on a book of epistemology and ontology for Penguin Random House.  He lives on the Isle of Skye\, and has 2 daughters and a son.

SUMMARY:Anne Ford: Self-care for Therapists during the Covid-19 Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:As we continue to navigate this ever-changing time\, it is especially important that we therapists take some time to reflect on how we are being impacted by Covid-19\, and to take stock of what we are doing to ensure that we are looking after our whole selves: physical\, emotional\, spiritual\, work and social. It is not only necessary\, it is also ethically responsible to keep our self-care practice to the fore. Drawing on research and my experience of running peer support groups and self-care workshops\, this will be an interactive evening\, and through discussion and exercises there will be an opportunity for members to explore and share their ideas about self-care. \nAnne Ford\, MSW\, MBACP\, is the founder of Connect Peer Support and has over thirty-eight years of experience in training Peer Supporters\, Peer Support Trainers (therapists) and running peer support groups.  In addition\, she runs workshops and groups that focus on self-care and wellbeing. During this time\, Anne has worked extensively in the higher education field\, where she was both a counsellor and developed and ran the Oxford University Peer Support Programme through the University Counselling Service. She has published two Peer Support Training Manuals – one for higher education and one for schools – and has written numerous articles on the topic. Anne is passionate about empowering people through the development of communication\, listening and support skills to improve wellbeing and connectedness and to increase a sense of belonging through building inclusive communities. SUMMARY:Introducing … an OPS Book Group with a difference
DESCRIPTION:Members may recall our Café Society evening\, held last autumn. It was a popular experiment in meeting as fellow professionals in an informal setting\, breaking free from the transferences that can sometimes silence us at clinical gatherings. \nIn the same spirit we now propose an OPS book group with a difference. We will meet twice a term and focus on creative literature of relevance to our concerns. Our texts will be accessible and short enough not to be a chore. Choosing them will evolve with the life of the group. \nIn the present circumstances we will meet on Zoom and numbers per group are limited to eight. We hope to form sufficient groups to meet demand. SUMMARY:Peer Support Groups
DESCRIPTION:Peer Support groups will be starting up again\, offering an opportunity to meet with colleagues and share what is on our minds.  They will be closed groups and participants will be asked to commit for a period of five weeks. They are open to members who have not yet been part of a group as well as those who would like to rejoin as part of a new group. The first group will be run on Wednesdays\, 4-5pm\, beginning on 21 October. The dates will be as follows: 21/10\, 28/10\, 4/11\,11/11 and 18/11. Please note that once they have started it will not be possible to admit new members. It is hoped that another group may start in November or January\, depending on numbers of people interested. SUMMARY:Dr Richard Gipps: The Regulation of Anxiety by the Pursuit of Virtue: Being Philosophical About It
DESCRIPTION:To be “philosophical” or “stoical” is to remain calm and able to think in the face of adversity. But how have the philosophers suggested we achieve this? And how can their deliberations be drawn on in the consulting room without therapy degrading into intellectual discussion? In this talk Richard will discuss the relation of six virtues – the cultivation of healthy pride (dignity)\, the development of ego strength (inner courage)\, amor fati (acquiescing to fate)\, the will to power (determination)\, receptivity to grace (the cultivation of gratitude)\, and seeing life sub specie aeternitatis (the bigger picture) – to the regulation of the anxieties met with in the consulting room. \n(Follow-up discussion for attendees: Wednesday October 21st 19.30 – 20.30) \nRichard Gipps is a Philosopher and Clinical Psychologist. His psychotherapy practice is in Oxford where he is also an associate of the University of Oxford’s Faculty of Philosophy. In 2019 he co-edited the Oxford Handbook of Philosophy and Psychoanalysis. Current projects include a philosophical book ‘On Madness’ (forthcoming\, Bloomsbury) and a non-academic work on ‘Love’s Possibility: Dignity and Loneliness in Human Life’. His work focuses on the use of philosophical reason to clarify what otherwise remains obscure in psychopathological theory and psychotherapeutic practice.

SUMMARY:May Workshop: CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:The corona virus is starting to effect many events around the globe. Unfortunately OPS is not exempt. Most of our planned events are still going ahead but one that we were particularly looking forward to offering will be cancelled. \nJeremy Holmes has let the Committee know that he is cancelling all his speaking events for the foreseeable future. Professor Holmes is in the age group that is considered to be the most at risk for possible serious consequences if exposed to Covid-19 virus. \nTherefore the Workshop advertised for 30th of May is not going ahead. \n___ \nThe brain has a mind of its own: attachment\, ambiguity  and the new science of psychotherapy \nThe past decade has seen the advent of an exciting new metapsychology\, based on the Bayesean brain and the Free Energy Principle (FEP) —with links to Freud’s ideas about psychic energy.  I shall outline the FEP\, showing how it relates to psychoanalytic psychotherapy\, especially free association\, dream analysis\,  and an analytic stance that both simulates and helps clarify ambiguity.  I shall link these to attachment-informed research on parent-infant biobehavioural synchrony\, the ‘borrowed brain’\, and their analogues in the therapeutic setting.  I shall suggest that key mutative features of psychotherapy are its capacity to help clients move from passivity to activity\,  and to tolerate ’surprise’\, which then helps generate novel and more complex generative models of the self and its relationships.  Lecture format will be interspersed with ‘live supervision’ and delegates are encouraged to bring clinical material \, especially where their own or their client’s ambiguity is to the fore. \nProfessor Jeremy Holmes was for 35 years a Consultant Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist in the NHS at UCL and then in North Devon. He has written 200+ peer-reviewed papers and chapters in the field of psychoanalysis and attachment theory.  He was Chair of the Psychotherapy Faculty of the Royal College of Psychiatrists 1998-2002. He set up and still teaches on the Masters/Doctoral psychoanalytic psychotherapy training and research programme at Exeter University\, where he is a visiting Professor. He also lectures nationally and internationally.His many books\, translated into many languages\, include The Oxford Textbook of Psychotherapy (2005\, co-editors Glen Gabbard and Judy Beck)\, Exploring In Security: Towards an Attachment-informed Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (Routledge 2010) which won the 2010 Canadian Psychological Association Goethe Award\, best seller John Bowlby and Attachment Theory\, (2nd edition 2013)\, The Therapeutic Imagination (2014).  A new edition of Introduction to Psychoanalysis (with Liz Allison and Antony Bateman\, Routledge)\,  and a volume with the same title as this talk (Confer Books) are due 2020.  He was the recipient of the 2009 New York Attachment Consortium Bowlby-Ainsworth Founders Award. Currently\, Jeremy enjoys music-making\, gardening\, Green politics and grand-parenting which are gradually eclipsing his lifetime devotion to psychoanalytic psychotherapy and attachment. \nThis event will be open to all students and therapists. \nFurther Information on the workshop will be published in January\, 2020  along with a booking reservation form.
