SUMMARY:A Guilty Victim\, Recovering after Trauma and Abuse - The Story of a Case Study - Toby Ingham
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, I will introduce the story of my work with William Smith and the book\, A Guilty Victim (Karnac\, March 2025)\, that grew out of it. A Guilty Victim tells the true story of a man’s recovery from grooming and sexual abuse at a Catholic boarding school in Ireland in the 1970s. It is an account of psychotherapy with an adult survivor\, written with the client’s full consent. The book presents a unique insight into the process of psychotherapy in action\, with nine moving illustrations created by the client to tell his life story. \nAbout Toby: \nToby Ingham is a UK-based psychotherapist and supervisor and member of the BPF. A former Clinical Director of South Bucks Counselling\, his writing has been commended in the British Journal of Psychotherapy.

SUMMARY:The Myths and Truths of Female Violence - Anna Motz
DESCRIPTION:In this talk Forensic Psychotherapist Anna Motz explores the taboo of female violence\, and its denial\, describing how the idealisation of women renders invisible their potential for aggression and re-enactment of trauma. This is particularly true for mothers\, who are especially idealised and romanticised. The difficulty of seeing women\, in their complexity\, agency and capacity for violence\, has implications for the assessment and treatment of all female offenders. Despite evidence that women can and do commit acts of violence\, against others\, notably their intimate partners\, their children and\, less frequently\, against members of the public\, the denial of female violence remains an entrenched social prejudice. As Welldon revealed\, the intergenerational transmission of maternal violence can be traced across at least three generations of women. Using clinical material to illustrate the theory of maternal narcissism Motz will elaborate on essential treatment issues in working with mothers who have committed serious acts of violence\, and also highlight the need to keep hope alive in these complex and often tragic cases. \nAnna Motz is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist\, consultant clinical and forensic psychologist\, forensic psychotherapist and author of several books\, most recently A Love that Kills: Stories of Forensic Psychology and Female Violence. She was  past president of the International Association for Forensic Psychotherapy and is a  consultant for the  EOS service at HMP Bronzefield working with Central and Northwest London NHS Foundation Trust for high risk complex women.  She is also a supervisor\, lecturer and expert in criminal and civil cases and has worked in forensic services for over 30 years.

SUMMARY:Psychotherapy with Survivors of War and Complex Loss - Sushila Dhall
DESCRIPTION:Complex/multiple traumatisation and complex loss can cause people fleeing war to become highly dysregulated\, lose trust in life and sense of self\, be unable to relax\, sleep or engage in life\, due to powerful flashbacks and intrusive bad memories\, and get physically ill from the impact of extreme overwhelm and loss. How do we work in psychotherapy with people who are very easily re-traumatised and have no secure base?  Using anonymised case examples from Refugee Resource\, I will describe how we can help people to come into the present\, process extreme trauma and start to live again\, even while they may be homeless\, do not know where family members are and/or do not know if they will be allowed to live safely in the UK. \nSushila Dhall has been working as a psychotherapist for 27 years\, and has worked for the NHS\, privately\, and for Refugee Resource in the Counselling Service for 21 years. She is also a trainer and supervisor.

SUMMARY:Shining a Light on Death - Illuminating the Wisdom Within - Wendy Halford
DESCRIPTION:Arguably\, the ability to feel comfortable around the subject of death is one of the great gifts of life. As a human\, you will face your own death and likely the deaths of loved ones. As a therapist\, you will often hear about death in relation to your clients too. This brief talk will include a look at some of the findings from the Lancet Commission on the Value of Death (Jan 2022)\, a description of “normal dying\,” a reminder that our own “wisdom within” is always available to us.  I will include considerations and suggestions when supporting people who are dying\, and general planning ideas around our own deaths.  There will also be a 5 minute film about “normal dying”. \nWendy is a former Registered Nurse who trained as a Soul Midwife in 2013. She facilitates educational workshops in death literacy for professionals and individuals\, encouraging participants to become ambassadors in their own circles for conversations around death and dying. In 2023 she was part of the organising committee for Kicking the Bucket\, a festival of living and dying\, which took place in and around Oxford.

DESCRIPTION:This workshop is an opportunity to think about how as therapists we relate to our client’s bodies and the feelings that are evoked about our own. I will share the results and discussion of a research project which was part of my master’s dissertation looking into the lived experience of therapists working with clients with obesity. Participants will be encouraged to share their own experiences within the group. \nDr Linda Jones\, MSt. Psychodynamic Practice  \nI am a Psychotherapeutic counsellor offering short- and long-term individual counselling to adults of all ages and work as  a tutor at Oxford University teaching communication skills to medical students.  I have more than 30 years’ experience of working with all ages in my medical role as a GP\, with a special interest in the challenges of living with chronic disease\, chronic pain and medically unexplained symptoms. I witnessed the struggles of patients with weight issues and the unacknowledged stigma they experienced within the health system which led to my interest in researching this area.

DESCRIPTION:Tom Tomaszewski is a UKCP-accredited psychoanalytic psychotherapist and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) Consultant working in private practice in Oxford and London\, England. He specialises in supporting individuals struggling with addiction\, dependency\, and the effects of oppression. He recently spoke ‘On No’ at the 2025 Neuropsychoanalysis Association congress in New York. His paper\, ‘Be somebody else: Improvisation\, momentum and psychoanalysis as social psychotherapy’\, will shortly to be published in the British Journal of Psychotherapy and is something of an introduction to the kinds of thing I will be talking about. \n…will not be televised \nWhat happens when we speak about working with trauma\, when we try to take a history\, and when repetition turns singular experiences into generalities? This talk\, which will have plenty of space for questions\, includes a short film made for the event\, Revolution\, a demonstration and discussion of Francine Shapiro’s EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing)\, and an opportunity to consider how you might think about revolution\, and what psychotherapy is if it isn’t revolutionary\, without ending up going round in circles.

The importance of the broader social landscape: social graces\, intersectionality and the importance of self-biography when working with families and clients.\nThe importance of understanding the therapist’s positioning when working systemically.\nThe value of reframing: from deconstructing narratives to repositioning the Self\nA case example\n\n  \nWe trained at the European Institute of Systemic-relational Therapies in Milan\, where we qualified as systemic family therapists in 2008. \nWe worked together as a systemic team since\, in close connection with local charities and social services. \nWe decided that working together ten hours a day was not enough\, so we got married and moved to the UK\, where we work as the systemic family therapy team at Broad Horizons Therapeutic Services\, Northampton\, and as senior lecturers at the local University. \nFerdinando currently leads the Foundation in Systemic Family Practice at Oxford-Brookes.

She worked for many years at the Oxfordshire Complex Needs Service and at present is working with the North Bucks Psychological Services. Now that the law has changed to allow counsellors to work with adults who want to discuss adoption\, what does this mean for practitioners? Is what we already do in counselling practice enough or are there pockets of knowledge we may be missing for this client group? \nIn this talk\, Jenny will examine some of the issues that arise in work around adoption and how these differ from work with other client groups\, especially thinking about attachment trauma and how an adopted person’s early life experiences impact on their relationships throughout life. \nJenny Pillar completed her therapy training at the University of Manchester in 2012 and has practiced in a number of settings including the NHS\, youth counselling\, men’s counselling and running a staff support service for a global NGO. She is the Founder and Clinical Director of Counselling Carers – a social enterprise that works with carers from all walks of life. She has a particular interest in supporting adopters\, foster carers and others who care for children with early life trauma and uses an approach informed primarily by Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy. Alongside her role at Counselling Carers\, she is also a psychotherapist in private practice.

SUMMARY:“Post-Partum Psychosis” - Dr Jessica Heron\, CEO\, Action on Post-Partum Psychosis\, Senior Research Fellow in Perinatal Psychiatry.
DESCRIPTION:Dr Jessica Heron is the Chief Executive of Action on Postpartum Psychosis (APP)\, the charity for women and families affected by severe postnatal mental illness. Jess studied Experimental Psychology at Corpus Christi College\, Oxford University before moving to Birmingham University to work on studies of postpartum psychosis (PP). Jess has a PhD in Psychiatry and a Postdoctoral Training Fellowship in Primary Care and Public Health. She led the Perinatal Research Programme at The Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust for 4 years\, before returning to Birmingham University Medical School. She founded the charity Action on Postpartum Psychosis in 2010\, leading to a sea-change in the public understanding of postpartum psychosis\, and improvements in care and support for women and families. Jess is a mum of two and lives in Gower\, South Wales. \nJess will talk about what’s known about postpartum psychosis\, and how we can support women and families through to full recovery.

DESCRIPTION:Julian will introduce and explore a topic that is arguably a keystone in analytical psychology: namely the Self and its relation to the ego. If Jung’s psychology can be said to be essentially a psychology of Self – as distinct from an ego psychology – then what is this Self? What can we say about it? How does it relate to ego? How do we work creatively with it? In this talk Julian will look at the Self in everyday life\, psychotherapy and in the beginning as we come into the world. \nJulian Masters is a Jungian analyst. He trained in London with the BPF (British Psychotherapy Foundation). He currently teaches on BPF’s public dream workshops\, MSc course\, introductory course and training theory program. He teaches also on the WMIP analytical psychotherapy training in Birmingham. He is a member of BJAA (British Jungian analytic Association) and the IAAP (International Association of Analytical Psychology). He lives in Oxford where he works with adults in private practice. Julian is also a musician\, composer and writer.

DESCRIPTION:Jo Augustus is a qualified Arts Psychotherapist who has practised working within Therapeutic Communities for the past 26 years. She is currently the Lead DTC Core Creative Psychotherapist at HMP Grendon and has worked there for the past 21 years. Previously she has worked within an Adolescent therapeutic community. Jo is currently responsible for the development and management of the Core Creative Psychotherapies Department at Grendon\, which comprises of a team of 10 Core Creative Psychotherapists whose modalities are art therapy\, music therapy and Psychodrama. In addition\, her clinical work at HMP Grendon is largely based working across two therapeutic communities\, including the Enhanced Assessment Unit. Jo is also a UKCP registered Creative Clinical Supervisor and  a UK registered EMDR Practitioner. Jo has developed functional evaluation and research methods concerning the efficacy of the core creative psychotherapies within this TC custodial setting. \n

The next OPS talk is scheduled for 18th February 2025. \n  \nThis event will be a discussion of Atlas’ book Emotional Inheritance. It will focus on intergenerational trauma and emotional material that is passed down from generation to generation. It will illustrate how patient and analyst enter each other’s inner world and discover themselves as participants within each other’s psychic life and introduce a relational model to thinking about the ways two subjectivities collude in promoting dissociation and the ways inherited trauma both finds shelter and comes to life in the analytic dyad. We will discuss the legacy of trauma\, the regulation of aggression\, the power of attachment and the many faces of our emotional inheritance. \nDr. Atlas is on the faculty at NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. She is the author of the books The Enigma of Desire: Sex\, Longing and Belonging in Psychoanalysis and Dramatic Dialogue: Contemporary Clinical Practice (co-authored with Lewis Aron)\, and the editor and contributor to When Minds Meet: The Work of Lewis Aron. Her last book Emotional Inheritance: A Therapist\, Her Patients and the Legacy of Trauma is an international bestseller\, translated into 26 languages. Atlas serves on the editorial boards of Psychoanalytic Dialogues and of Psychoanalytic Perspectives. She is a recipient of the André François Award\, the NADTA Research Award and the Gradiva Award. DESCRIPTION:How does a supervision group help the therapist to a better understanding of their client or group? Is there something in the relational dynamic in the supervision group when the therapist talks about their client that gives clues to what the therapist needs to know? The speaker will draw attention to these dynamics\, giving fictional examples of how the group may be able to help when the work seems to have reached an impasse /or ‘seems stuck’. \nA creative exercise will be offered to help people discuss more about their experience of supervision groups. \nMargaret Gallop is an independent Group Analyst writing and doing a small amount of training and supervision. She started her professional career as a teacher of small children which underpins an interest and exploration of child development\, how early experience affect adult life. Margaret trained as a counsellor and then a group analyst. She has worked mostly in the community\, in Primary Care and in the third sector\, providing therapy\, psychodynamic and group analytic training in University and Institute settings. As a supervisor she has supported professionals\, trainees and volunteers working with young people\, parents and adults in the community. SUMMARY:"20 Ways to Break Free from Trauma" - Philippa Smethurst
DESCRIPTION:Philippa Smethurst has been a psychotherapist for 30 years and has a special interest in trauma.  She has worked in General Practice and has been a clinical supervisor for a number of charities. She trained at the Metanoia Institute in Integrative Psychotherapy and has also trained in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. She has also published several articles\, particularly on working with asylum seekers and refugees\, and a number of book chapters on the subject of trauma. \nTrauma is a wound – one that we often hide from ourselves and others. \nThe subject has been a long-held fascination of mine. I began writing this book on trauma during the pandemic lockdown when many people were questioning their lives and making changes. Many others were overwhelmed. To me at that time\, unpacking trauma seemed like an appropriate response to a challenge that faced our world. \nHow do we respond when life feels unbearable? How might we understand own own and others’ sometimes complex responses when life is too much?   I will consider trauma’s impact. For example\, how trauma fragments – submerging within us powerful parts of us that can eclipse cognitive processing\, dominate our ways of being and erode our quality of life. I will also consider the impact of these unprocessed and sometime unrecognised trauma parts on others\, within families\, organisations and societies.

DESCRIPTION:Jane Harris\, Co-Director of Student Welfare and Support Services and Head of Counselling at the University of Oxford \nStudent Counselling in Higher Education: The Seductive Danger of the Medical Model \nOver the past two decades there has been a growing narrative of crisis in relation to adolescent\, youth and student mental health in the UK while population level prescription rates for antidepressant medication have doubled in the past ten years. Universities\, schools and colleges have been scrambling to meet young people’s emotional and psychological needs\, and in some institutions there has been a significant growth in the size and scope of counselling\, mental health and wellbeing services and interventions. In the midst of this is a curious trend whereby University student counselling services are increasingly positioned and defined in relation to this mental health crisis\, accompanied by an encroaching collapse of counselling down to the task of diagnosis linked symptom reduction. It feels increasingly difficult to ask if this framework of understanding is helpful\, and that we may need to start whispering about the development of insight\, identity formation\, the overcoming of interpersonal\, relational conflict and the vagaries of the developmental task of emerging adulthood. In this presentation I will delve deeper into these questions and invite us to think together about the collective task of helping young adults navigate life in a complex\, sometimes hostile\, world and whether the oft-pathologizing lens of mental health is our most useful tool in this endeavour. \nBiog: \nJane is Co-Director of Student Welfare and Support Services and Head of Counselling at the University of Oxford\, prior to this she was the Head of Student Counselling and Wellbeing at the University of Leeds. Jane is a UKCP accredited psychotherapeutic counsellor (Mst\, University of Oxford) and an organisational Reflective Practice group convenor (Diploma\, IGA). SUMMARY:Revd Canon Dr Joanna Collicutt: 'Head and heart knowledge in psychological therapy: some insights from the science of memory.'
DESCRIPTION:Psychological therapists have always been aware of the distinction between the client’s theoretical understanding of issues and affect-laden insight. (A similar distinction is drawn in spiritual traditions between theological belief and personal faith.) Cognitive science has been able to give some precision to this distinction with important applications in the treatment of both anxiety and depression\, but an additional perspective is provided by the experience of people with memory deficits due to illness or injury affecting the brain\, who typically  retain heart knowledge in the absence of head knowledge. This talk will explore these issues drawing on a mix of theory and case studies\, aiming to identify implications for therapeutic practice. \nJoanna is a clinical psychologist and Anglican priest. She has worked in the areas of adult mental health\, paediatric craniofacial surgery\, and (for most of her NHS career) in neurology and neurological rehabilitation. After ordination she moved into the field of psychology of religion and her academic career has focused on psychology of religion and the spiritual care of older adults. She has written many books and academic papers. These include ‘Ethical practice in brain injury rehabilitation’ (OUP)\, ‘The psychology of Christian character formation.’ (SCM Press)\, ‘Being mindful\, being Christian’ (Monarch Books)\, and ‘Neurology and Religion’ (CUP). Her latest book (forthcoming in 2024) explores the relationship between Christian spiritual practices and psychological responses to bereavement.

DESCRIPTION:You’ve probably heard of EMDR – that weird finger-wagging\, eye movement-following therapy that’s getting quite a bit of press these days. Prince Harry has famously had it\, and so have quite a few prominent folk ready to talk publicly about their experience of EMDR clearing their PTSD. \nIf you’d like to know more\, or indeed if you’re already up and running with EMDR and would like to go a bit deeper\, we’re delighted to welcome EMDR Consultant and post-basic EMDR workshop leader Mark Brayne to explore with us some of the magic of this comprehensive psychotherapy\, and why he thinks that EMDR is becoming a game-changer in the world of emotional wellbeing and therapy. \nMark is a former BBC and Reuters foreign correspondent with past postings (a LONG time ago in the old cold war world) in Moscow\, Berlin\, Vienna and Beijing\, and he retrained later in life as a transpersonal psychotherapist (MA 2000). \nWith his wife Jutta\, also an EMDR Consultant\, and their daughter Katharine\, Mark runs and founded the EMDR therapy and training company EMDR Focus\, and especially since the world went four years ago when Covid struck\, works and trains with clients and fellow therapists around the world\, especially in Australia/New Zealand and increasingly in North America as well as the UK. \nHe joins us on [time\, date and venue] to introduce his particular way of working with EMDR\, focusing in particular on early-life attachment. SUMMARY:Christiane Sanderson: Becoming a Trauma wise Practitioner when Working with Survivors of  Child Sexual Abuse
DESCRIPTION:While there is a greater awareness of the nature and impact of child sexual abuse (CSA) in a range of contexts such as child sexual exploitation\, sexual trafficking and in institutions such as boarding schools and children’s care homes\, what is still largely underreported  is CSA inside the family with  few of these cases ever coming to the attention of the authorities\, especially sibling sexual abuse .  While it is estimated that  70% of sexual abuse occurs in families and sibling sexual abuse three to five times more common than generational CSA\, it remains poorly understood as it dwells in the dark\, shrouded in secrecy and a veil of silence. Many families are environments of safety in providing the love\, care and nurturing that is essential for the healthy growth and development of children\, some families are war zones in which children are terrorised by family members who exercise power and control over them through fear\, denial\, distortion of reality and physical and sexual abuse\, and sexual  violence. The shame and stigma of CSA within the family\, means that most survivors remain silent about their experience as they have no voice\, which prevents them from reporting or seeking support. \nMany children who have experienced sexual abuse in the family normalise their experience as they have no point of reference to compare their experience. This is especially the case in sibling sexual abuse which is often normalised and minimised leading to delayed trauma in later adulthood. Given the shame and secrecy surrounding sexual abuse in the family it often remains undiagnosed as an underlying cause for a range of long-term physical and mental health conditions such as complex post-traumatic stress reactions\, trauma related dissociation\, eating disorders\, self-harm\, addiction to alcohol or drugs\, negative self-beliefs\, depression\, trauma related shame\, social anxiety\, compromised sexuality  and  suicidal ideation \nThis workshop aims to unravel the nature and dynamics of CSA within the family by biological as well as blended family members\, adults and siblings and peers such as cousins. It will examine the factors that prevent disclosure such as the role of secrecy\, shame\, normalisation\, distortion of reality\, and the need to protect family members to avoid breaking up the family or become scapegoated. The impact of CSA and its link to trauma and delayed trauma reactions will be explored alongside the principles of  the Power Threat Meaning Framework\, Trauma Informed Practice  and the Phased Oriented Approach to Trauma Recovery\, to equip practitioners with essential skills when working with survivors to make the link between presenting symptoms and a history of CSA\, and enable them reclaim reality in order to heal and recover from CSA. \nLearning Objectives \n\nIdentify the nature of CSA \, and the range of CSA in families in particular intergenerational abuse from adults\, aunts\, uncles\, partners\,  or grandparents\, as well as sexual abuse by siblings\, step siblings and cousins\nRecognise the power and control dynamics used in CSA in families such as silence\, secrecy\, shame\, distortion of reality and denial to minimise the risk of disclosure as well as the need to protect the family\nSpecify the impact of CSA in families and how it underpins a range of long term physical and mental health conditions such as complex post-traumatic stress reactions\, trauma related dissociation\, eating disorders\, self-harm\, addiction to alcohol or drugs\, negative self-beliefs\, depression\, trauma related shame\, social anxiety\, compromised sexuality  and  suicidal ideation\nHow to apply the principles of the Power Threat Meaning Framework\, Trauma Informed Practice  and the Phased Oriented Approach to Trauma Recovery\, to equip practitioners with essential skills when working with survivors to heal and recover from CSA\n\nChristiane Sanderson is a former senior lecturer in Psychology at the University of Roehampton\, of London with 35 years of experience working in the field of child sexual abuse\, sexual violence and complex trauma. DESCRIPTION:Dr Matthew Chuard is currently the Course Lead for the MA Working with children\, young\npeople & families: a psychoanalytic observational approach: the pre-clinical training in child\nand adolescent psychotherapy at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust. He\nteaches psychoanalytic theory and offers clinical supervision on the Tavistock doctoral\ntraining in child psychotherapy. He has recently published a paper in the Journal of Child\nPsychotherapy: ‘Primitive anxieties and the small group: multi-agency working and the risk of\ncollaboration’. He originally worked as a secondary school teacher and then trained as an\nEducational and Child Psychologist before going on to qualify as a Child and Adolescent\nPsychotherapist. As a Child Psychotherapist he has worked in a number of NHS and\neducational settings with children\, young people and their families and also works in private\npractice. He is currently a senior Child Psychotherapist in the Autism and Learning\nDisabilities team at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust. His current research\ninterests are the work of Melanie Klein\, the use and function of drawings in child\npsychotherapy and unconscious processes in groups and institutions.
