SUMMARY:Psychosis - a Lacanian Perspective - Conor McCormack
DESCRIPTION:Psychosis – to what use can we put this loaded signifier? Lacanian analysis starts by binning the notion of psychosis as disorder or illness\, reframing it as a commonplace subjective position in language. This talk explores how analytic treatment can offer a way beyond the deadlock of medication and risk management that defines current mental health services. \nOften as not psychosis is a low-key thing\, discerned through attentive listening over time. But what does one listen out for? And how does an idea of diagnosis determine the direction of the treatment? The speaker will use clinical material to elaborate a Lacanian approach to working with psychosis. \nBiography: Conor McCormack is a Lacanian psychoanalyst working in private practice in Bristol\, and a member of the Centre for Freudian Analysis and Research (CFAR). He has extensive experience working as a psychotherapist for the NHS. \nConor also teaches and writes. Prior to this\, he made films. ‘In the Real’\, an observational documentary he made in collaboration with the Bristol Hearing Voices Network – a self-help group for people who hear voices and have other unusual experiences – is available to watch here: https://www.bhvn.co.uk/in-the-real

SUMMARY:Dance Movement Psychotherapy (DMP) - Elisabeth (Lizzy) Spight MA RDMP
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation I would like to give a short insight into the beginnings of dance therapy and how the unique history and development of this therapy form has shaped its identity. It will explain the attachment to various psychological schools\, portray important pioneers and in particular highlight the importance of Rudolf Laban as a person and theoretician of modern dance\, movement analysis and its impact on dance therapy as we know it today. It will also make clear why dance therapy\, although deeply rooted\, is consistently embracing new research in all areas of psychology and neuroscience. \nThen I will briefly talk about the structure of sessions and my dance therapy work in various age groups\, and mainly focus more in depth on two adult case studies and their short term therapy processes in one to one work with me. These include the clients’ drawings of their own dance therapy process. \nAs this is a presentation of a movement based therapy form I will also invite you to a short guided experiential\, to be able to experience your own sensory awareness and movement\, individually and as a group. It will be completely voluntary of course. If you prefer to stay seated that is fine. \nElisabeth is a registered Dance Movement Psychotherapist MA\, practicing in Oxford\, UK\, for over 10 years; she works with a wide age range\, offers one to one therapy and group therapy. Since 2023 she has been awarded a position of ‘artist in residence’ for the NHS/Oxfordhealth\, mental health departments. \nShe has over 30 years of experience as a performer\, choreographer and dance teacher\, after completing her dance education in Hamburg\, Germany\, at an internationally renowned dance college; and also holds a degree in special education\, from Hamburg University. \nShe is deeply rooted in the creative arts (dance and music) as well as in the therapy work. www.oxfordshiredancetherapy.com

SUMMARY:Enlisting the Patient's Will to Do Therapy - Jon Fredrickson
DESCRIPTION:Patients come to therapy seeking healing\, but their history of relationships is that help often led to harm. Thus\, they enter in conflict: they want to engage with you\, but out of fear\, they hesitate. Perhaps they are vague. Sometimes\, they say they don’t have a problem. Other times\, they go along\, hiding their will to engage. Some patients were talk to hide their will and submit to a tyrannical parent. In all these cases\, patients\, due to their experience\, are unable to bring their will to the task of therapy. In this video example\, we will see how these problems manifest and how to help patients with their conflicts so they can join you as a full partner\, bringing their will to work together with you in therapy. \nBiography: Jon Frederickson is on the faculty of the New Washington School of Psychiatry. He has published eight books. His book\, Co-Creating Change\, won the British Medical Association Book award in psychiatry in 2013. His most recent book is\, Clinical Thinking in Psychotherapy.
