Dr Heward Wilkinson – “Short Term Fixes, versus Long-Term Navel Gazing” Is there still a place for long-term relationship based work in psychotherapy and counselling in today’s world?
Tuesday 13th February 2018 @ 7:45 pm - 9:15 pm
Today’s dominant understanding of psychotherapy and counselling is increasingly based on technologies of intervention, according to a programmatic or manualised model. A relationship based understanding of psychotherapy and counselling, implemented over the longer term, appears increasingly superseded by what are claimed as more cost-effective evidence-based technologies of intervention. Is there still a case for these long-term approaches in today’s world? I shall explore two dimensions of such a case:
- the therapeutic value (and the grounds for it) of long-term narrative-relational work, with no fixed agenda in advance, where there is genuine client need for it;
- a case for longer term work in terms of cost-effectiveness, by contrast with repeated hospitalisation or descent into poverty and social incompetence.
